Trends In Curtains

The very first thing that I notice whenever I go to someone's house are the curtains. For some reason, I always think that curtains reflect the personality of the people who are living there. I really enjoy looking and learning about other people's style and drapes tell a lot about a person. From being able to tell if a person is high maintenance to whether or not they are too busy in life (hence NO curtains) – drapes tell a story.

Drapes are the “eyes” of the room, allowing certain amounts of light in and controlling the tone of a house. First impressions start with the window and the size, shape and color of your curtains determine the theme of your d├ęcor. For example, airy, light and pastel hued curtains reveal that a person is open and has nothing to hide. Darker, thicker and heavier fabrics can mean that a person enjoys their privacy and is likely more introverted.

A few new trends in curtains include roman shades, sheer shapes and layering. Layering different materials has become the “it” fad of this year – giving the window depth and personality. Sheer drapes are the simple, minimalist look for the season – providing a light and open feel to the room. Roman shades are the look for the more “organized” style, making a room look neat and organized.

Consider accessories for your window treatments also! Creative tie backs such as tassles or ropes have become extremely popular, especially with themed rooms. Curtain rods with flair such as boat oars and whitewashed branches are also a look that have that shabby chic effect. Don't be afraid to think outside of the box and get creative with your curtains! Change with the seasons and try new things – see what your drapes say about you.
